The Gujarat Forest Department has introduced solar-powered boats for patrolling lakes in protected areas like Nal Sarovar and Thol. These boats are silent, non-polluting, and ideal for bird habitats. Forest rangers use them to monitor migratory bird movements, illegal fishing, and plastic dumping. Boats are equipped with GPS trackers and binocular mounts for better surveillance. Ornithologists and tourists can also ride them during regulated hours. Compared to diesel boats, maintenance costs have dropped by 60%. The initiative supports eco-tourism and conservation goals while reducing the carbon footprint in fragile wetland ecosystems. More boats are being built locally to expand the fleet.
